Hackers can be classified into different categories, such as white hat, black hat and gray cap, based on the intent of hacking a system. These different words come from the old spaghetti western, where the bad man wears a black cowboy hat and the good man wears white cap.

Hacker Types:

White hat hackers
White hat hackers are also known as Ethical Hackers. They never intend to harm any system, rather they try to detect weaknesses in computer or network system as a part of penetration testing and vulnerability assessment.

Ethical hacking is not illegal and it is one of the jobs available in the IT industry. There are many companies that rent ethical hackers for penetration testing and vulnerability assessment.

Black hat hackers
Black hat hackers, also known as crackers, are those who hack into any system to gain unauthorized access and harm its operation or steal sensitive information.

Black hat hacking is always illegal because of its bad intentions, including theft of corporate data, violation of privacy, harm to the system, blocking communication, etc.

Gray hat hackers
Gray hat hackers are a mixture of black hat and white hat hackers. They work without malicious intent but for their entertainment, they take advantage of security weakness in computer systems or networks without the owner's permission or knowledge.

Their intention is to bring the weakness in the attention of the owners and get the praise from the owners or a little reward.

Red hat hackers
